Times Eight

Nature is truly fascinating.

————

The patience of a spider as it weaves its silky art

Eight legs that need no orders on how each should do its part

A multitude of jewel-like eyes mark each and every thread

Designs which seem impossible from such a tiny head

Genetic DNA involved, old patterns reproduced

Copied with machine-like skills, no pre-planned thoughts induced

Some webs suspended in mid-air, reflecting sun on strands

Others form dark tunnels with their endless sticky bands

Their size is not a factor in the fear they can create

An unexpected sighting causes hearts to palpitate

Like eating forest mushrooms; are they good or are they bad?

They all look like they’re deadly, it’s enough to drive one mad

Though some are large and frightening, most are small and hard to find

The tale of their existence told by webs they leave behind

Exquisite engineering sometimes trumps our fear and hate

They understand the math of life, while working in base eight

Existing as a paradox: some frighten, some amaze

Just one small gift of life on Earth on which our eyes can gaze
