Abandoned Dreams

How old were you

when you abandoned your dreams?

When you became aged

Jaded?

Beat down and exhausted and tattered

With the realization that you would not achieve

What you had been striving for

your entire life?

What lead you to

conclude they could not be attained?

Was it those people who told you

No?

That your hopes were unrealistic

That you weren’t smart enough or popular enough

Or good enough

to have the life you aspired to?

Have you dreamed of things

others have never imagined?

Seen visions of breathtaking

Beauty?

Heard symphonies unplayed

Books unwritten, sonnets unspoken, plays unstaged

And thought

these things should be?

Do not despair

Your dreams are not dependent

Upon those who would discourage you

Nor upon anyone save yourself

They play upon your mind as an exercise

To serve as a reminder

That somewhere

Between reality and hope

Lies possibility

And that to believe in possibility

Is to dream
