Empathy

May I understand your experience

Or better yet, feel it

Within your frame of reference

And make it mine

Place myself inside your essence

See the world as you do

Rather than from the vantage

Of my privilege

May I walk a mile in your shoes

Feel your aching hunger

The parch of your dry thirst

Amongst plenty

Not merely as an intellectual exercise

But as one of my own sense

Fear, longing, desire

Infused in my emotions

That I may see the world differently

Not from some ivory tower

But from your Ground Zero

And be motivated

Not from guilt

Nor pity

But by justice

My response being one of compassion

And of action

The conviction blossoming within me

That no one should be made to feel

The lesser

Recognizing that we all share

The same hopes and dreams

And that all are deserving

Of the same rewards and opportunities

Such being self-evident from our status

As equals

And as human beings
