Splendid Isolation

The teeming crowd withdraws

Or I from it

Each shrinking from the other

Retreating down a long hallway

Features receding

A maddening cacophony of voices

Screaming hurricane winds

Become but the gentle whisper

Of dust motes floating in a ray of sun

Deeper, deeper into my sanctum

Muffled quietude

A smell of dear books and old leather

The overstuffed chair sinking beneath my weight

As I settle with learned tome

A snifter of brandy close to hand

Entering another world

Different faces, names, voices, presences

A part, yet separate, of my existence

Balanced between two worlds

The one deferred, and other embraced

Thusly passing a rainy afternoon

Embracing splendid isolation
