Mind’s House

Within my home are places, where demons do abide

They stab their knives into my back, stick thorns into my side

Their angry claws leave jagged marks upon the walls and floor

They quickly move to block escape from each and every door.

Appearing out of nowhere as they try to steal my breath

Their unrelenting anguish fills my mind with thoughts of death

Created from the grains of life which cosmic millstone rolled

They eat the grist of yesterday as each new day unfolds.

They doggedly pursue me as they try and drag me down

Resistance is anathema as their faces sneer and frown

No garlic braid or crucifix will cause them to disperse

I know just one elixir which might banish their dark curse.

Love and laughter mixed into the crucible that is hope

Some milk of human kindness and ability to cope

A smile beneath the eyes of friends, a stranger’s helping hand

The light beyond the darkness, dawning sun on beach’s sand.

My mixture, cobbled quickly, from life’s happy moments gleaned

Is quaffed in hopes that demon’s thoughts, from mind’s blackboard, are cleaned

Resurgence of the spirit, the resilience of the mind

Resolve to ever keep the quest, an inner peace to find.
