White Dress On The Beach

“Damn it, it’s cold.” Daniel muttered as he watched the beautiful raven-haired woman, he followed from the bar standing alone on the beach as she took off her white dress and walked to the water’s edge and stood waiting. He called out to her, but she didn’t hear him over the wind and crashing surf.

He stopped running and stared in amazement as a seal surfaced and barked at the woman as she dove into the freezing water and swam toward it.

“What the Hell!” Daniel screamed, terrified as he watched as the two seals frolicked in the surf. “How is this possible?” he repeated as he stood shivering as he watched transfixed until the sky lightened eastward and the two seals jumped onto a nearby wooden dock to watch the sunrise.

Daniel walked to the water’s edge as the two seals parted ways, he picked up the white dress and waited for the woman to return to the beach.

She ran onto the beach laughing, but she stopped when she saw him standing there with her dress in his hand. She only hesitated a moment before she marched up to Daniel and reached out her hand.

“Can I have my dress back please?” She looked Daniel in the eye and smiled as he blushed like a teenager.

“Uh, yeah here, I’m sorry,” he stammered as he handed her the dress and watched as she slipped it over her head. He was wondering what to say next when she beat him to the punch.

“So, how long have you been watching? What did you see?” she asked as she started to walk back to the strip with its bars and motels.

“I saw the most amazing thing I have ever seen in my life.” He gasped as he hurried to keep up with the woman or seal, or whatever the Hell she was. “If people found out about this it would change the world. History and science textbooks would have to be re-written. This changes everything.”

She stopped and glared at Daniel and spat. “We have done you no harm, but you would condemn us to zoos, if we are lucky, or science labs and vivisection if we’re not. Humans suck.”

Her anger knocked the awe and wonder from Daniel like he had been slapped. He stood stunned for several minutes as the battle raged inside his mind, after several minutes he whispered, “I would never hurt someone as amazing as you and I don’t want to hurt your mate, or whatever you call him. I can keep a secret, trust me.

The selkie considered Daniel for several minutes then walked away as Daniel just stood there before he shook himself as if he was waking from a dream and ran after her. “hey, wait, are you hungry? I’m starving, there’s a diner around the corner, can I buy you breakfast? Or would your mate get jealous?”

She laughed as she answered. “He’s a seal, he has no sense of jealousy, that’s a human thing. I ate out there, but I could use a cup of coffee. I can trust you to keep our secret right?” she asked as she took Daniel’s arm.

“Like I said, you can trust me,” Daniel answered as they walked back to the boardwalk.
