Her Last Farewell and Testament

Reminiscent of Carole King's 1971 hit, "It's Too Late."

————

So many years ago when we were young,

in college, with like-minds we were among,

we broke up—she found joys in other boys

her favorite was just one of many toys.

Don’t count on vows and promises to last;

at first, we hunger for them—then we fast.

They’re entry keys, much like a pledge or oath,

but once we’re in, for keeping them, we’re loath.

In spite of years of marriage—most downhill—

before midway, it seems she lost her thrill.

Of course it’s not her fault, because she tried,

until, at last, something inside her died.

Perhaps she’d planned her final words would be,

“You never did what he could do with me.”
