Check Engine

I killed the headlights in my mind,

ran through every red light,

following the curve to a decision

I had to make it between thick fog

and condensation,

blurring checkmarks,

and thoughts on changing course

made their way through my icy fingers,

tapping the steering wheeling;

I wouldn’t u-turn to exchange my pride

for the crumbling self-esteem I see in your tears;

empty me with three words that warm my soul,

caress my bones,

and confirm I’m the one you still want.

We’re saved by the check engine light,

broken down on the side of the fucking road.
