A Rural New Year's Eve

Faced boredom one New Year's Eve young aristocratic Paulie decided to accomplish something... Before midnight

————

Darkness hovered over the Farm on night 365 and young Paulie closed the schoolbook’s next chapter before pushing his chair out. Standing up motioning towards the door, he saw Momma and Poppa frozen staring at the chess board. Realizing the only thing moving seemed to be the clock inching its way to the midnight hour, the maturing teen decided something needed to be accomplished.

Without disturbing the setting Paulie grabbed his jacket, crossed over the kitchen floor, and headed outside entering the enchanting rural air. Looking up he noticed royal Princess Lida’s castle quietly dimly bright, reminding the aristocrat’s son there was not much difference between their two exciting social lifestyles.

Jogging across the yard, and within seconds found refuge, “you hungry Zebra?” Paulie inquired. Filling the plastic jug with feed, the boy proceeded dumping the contents where it could be eaten. Patting the zebra wishing, “happy New Year,” the four-legged referee’s eyes peacefully shut. “Yup pretty quiet tonight, no debatable border war argument conversations.”

Upon leaving Paulie walked the path to the porch and grabbing the screen door, he glanced confirming Princess Lida also called it a night. Observing none of the artistic army pieces did anything, Paulie went to bed.

Jumping under the covers he finally heard parental dialogue, “check,” one voice said.

“Check mate,” the other replied and one more statement followed, “its bedtime.”

Early the next morning, Paulie walked out fully dressed, “Happy New Year, son,” Poppa acknowledged.

“Yes, Paulie, Happy New Year,”

“Did you have fun celebrating?” Poppa questioned.

“Yes, Poppa, I had a wonderful dream,”

“What about?” Momma asked.

“Becky Sue and Princess Lida came over and,” promptly Poppa interrupted, “do you think you should go down to the barn and make sure the zebra has breakfast?”

“Yes, Poppa,” Paulie answered finding his coat.
