Butterfly/A Speck...

Butterfly/A Speck On the Wind

Looking above into azure skies

I see silhouetted against ivory clouds

A dot, a speck on the wind

Moving to and fro against the cottony backdrop

Slowly descending in loops and swirls

Dives and side-slips

Until I can see it is a butterfly

Wafted by the breeze

To altitudes far above its normal plane of existence

I close my eyes

And take the place of the soaring flyer

Fearful of heights henceforth unattained

Yet in awe of the landscape spread before me

Fields of dew-kissed grass

Forests of lush, verdant trees just past summer’s solstice

Sparkles of gold on the wave-flecked western bay

Sustained aloft by forces beyond my control

Renewing my gaze

I see the traveler come ever closer

An occasional flap of orange and black gossamer wings

Otherwise gliding with the currents

Defying gravity

Until at last the butterfly alights

On fragrant yellow flowers at my side

And we both return

To the realities of the corporeal world
