Fighting For The Butterflies

As a writer and an activist who cares and thinks deeply about our planet, the pollution, etc., it was time for me to write a new poem addressing environmental harms and issues we are dealing with nationally and globallly. This poem represents my current thinking.

————

On the rise, is toxic air,

lung poisoning oxygen

mixed with unseen chemicals

we cannot see or name.

Butterflies fly passed me,

some are monarchs, beautiful,

brown, black, free beings

taking advantage of soft winds.

I feel for them. They do not

know we are polluting

the planet we all live on.

Why do we need to be toxic?

Why do the butterflies too

Need to breathe the air

We do not take care?

They are not guilty

Of the environmental travesties

We humans make happen on a

regular basis.

I wish I could fly like a butterfly.

I would spread my wings

To find the cleanest air possible.

I would aim my energy towards

Clear, blue waters to hover over

them for as long as I could inhaling,

exhaling. Inhaling exhaling. .

We deserve better.

The butterflies deserve better.

This planet deserves as much

protection and care we can provide

through policy, laws, the wisdom

Of Indigenous people.

The air is lethal these days.

Mankind could care less.

Dear butterflies, I wish you

all the best.
