A Memory
/A memory of a pet.
————
Your pleading eyes look up at me and I know
it’s time, our time together. So, out we go full
of romps and frolic across the meadows of my
mind, pausing to check each flower before us.
With your eyes full of adventure, we press on with
careful inspection of every twig and rock in our path.
And together we discover the mysteries of nature’s
own as I watch you leap at every lark on the wing.
Your eyes meet mine for assurance as we
turn toward home, tarrying for a moment
at each new scent in the wind. At last, we
arrive and full of joy, you jump into my lap.
Ready for a well-earned rest, I say as
your droopy eyes signal it’s time for
our nap. Your paws rest softly on my knee
and gently I reach down to kiss your head.
It is then I am reminded it was no more
than a dream. My trusted companion for
years, you have led me this way and that,
foisting new tricks on me at every turn.
Coming home from a walk, I open the door
expecting two paws against my leg and
one excited lick to seal our reunion. And
I pause to realize you are no longer here.
In the silence of the moment, I muse on my
own time and end, a time when I will cross
that bar and meet my faithful friend once again
knowing we will never, ever be apart again.
