World War None

This is about the war against cancer and disease

————

The invading army draws near.

There is no hope.

I bite down deep to mitigate the pain.

This time will be different.

This time the bullets won’t fly past my ear

singing their sweet song of victory.

I falter once, then twice,

picking myself up,

I prepare to face my enemy.

I hold my shield high,

still they advance.

There is no turning back,

no white flag.

They come for me.

They surround me,

Dressed all in white.

Their uniforms look familiar,

but I cannot identify my foe.

I struggle as they place

the mask upon my face,

chocking out all life.

The struggle is over.

Everything grows dark

as the surgeon lifts his scalpel

and cuts into my diseased flesh.
