The Shadow Of Mortality

A poem that reflects on the fragility of life and how, with age, our awareness and consciousness of our own mortality seems to grow.

————

It was present from your early years

Though behind you, and obscure

The object of more worldly fears

When remaining years are fewer

Around us, its presence creeps

Through every window, every door

It lies with us, but never sleeps

In times of peace as much as war

A foreboding shade becomes more clear

As age and years advance

But why is it we are here

If not to dream and dance?

Don’t be consumed by the dark –

Shadows can’t live without light

Let the two

Be a guide for you

On your way to do what’s right

While Mortality’s shadow is our fate

Be the best you can afore it’s too late
