The Play

I stand upon darkened stage

The theater vacant

Silent

And again dig deep within

The well of experience

Looking for inspiration

Desire

To play my part

No patrons fill the stalls

No orchestra sets the mood

No director advances the plot

There is only stillness

As I search for emotion

And meaning

In the empty words

Of a script I did not write

And cannot recite

With any conviction

For I feel nothing

But that the curtain has rung

And the message I had sought

To convey

Remains unspoken

The audience

Unmoved

And the longing of my soul

Unanswered
