I Carried You

I grieved when my brother killed himself, and treasured my memories of him. Now I find that those memories have faded, and I am grieving again to lose him a second time, to lose him for good.

————

so carefully, trapped in a box, beribboned.

Your hair blond halo in the wind,

your eyes blue marbles caging light,

your dimpled laugh, your easy gait,

the all of you I didn’t want to lose.

But now I find I’m tricked by time,

who left the box wide open,

and what was you has disappeared.

I didn’t think I’d cry again

to find you gone a second time,

to find you gone for good.
