Deferred

When we defer our dreams, are they lost, or do they wait to explode? "Deferred" is a response poem to “Dream Deferred” by Langston Hughes.

————

A dream deferred

is a letter under a bin

full of mystery missives

in the Dead Mail Center,

that changed its name

to the Mail Recovery Center,

but your letter didn’t get

the memo on that.

A dream deferred

is an old newspaper

under a keg of dynamite,

both from 1954

when nothing happened,

encased in a rusted cannister

that detonates from an explosion

of regret.
