Birthing a New You

Life can be very challenging. When you decide to take on a new challenge, you are going to feel discomfort. It’s this way for many people. It’s a normal part of the process. I invite you today to take on that new challenge in your life. It will be uncomfortable, you will feel fear, and you may want to quit. Don’t quit. Reach out for help. You deserve it. You can do it.

I am a male. I know nothing of the pain of childbirth. To pretend I do would be extremely dismissive to the women in the world who have. I will not go there.

I have experienced birth of other types. While not nearly as painful as childbirth, they are nonetheless uncomfortable.

I am going through such an uncomfortable time in my life.

I am a musician, and have been teaching happily for many years. It has been something that has brought me great joy. The children I teach are a bright light in my life. I have had many a day when I felt miserable going to school, and left feeling much better. There is something magical about the spirit of children that brighten my day and life in general.

There is also a part of my life that I have been practicing since I was a child. That is my writing. Ever since I was a child I have been writing ideas down. I believed I had a little talent in this idea, and I always wanted to explore and see if there was anything there to be cultivated.

Then 2018 happened.

And, it really happened to me. I found the willingness to write thoughts down that have always been going around in my mind. I don't know if there was anything particularly new to the thoughts, but I was now willing to share them with others.

It was a birthing of sorts. I felt like these ideas needed to come out. To prevent them from coming would cause me stress. To release them caused great relief.

Like anything new in life, when you stretch it's going to hurt a bit. What I'm finding through this process of allowing my writing to be public is that I am bumping up against so many old fears about not being good enough, wanting to be liked, thinking that maybe I'm a little crazy for having these ideas of hope, and other thoughts that I don't fully understand yet.

It's uncomfortable, because although I need to allow these ideas to keep flowing, I need to confront all of the thinking that resists this flow. It's as if I'm floating down a river that I must go down, and having to negotiate the dams that I see in the middle of it. Sometimes, I hit a dam, and then have to figure out how to get over it. It seems like it would be easier to just get to shore and forget the whole thing. Then I realize that there really is no way to do that without feeling extremely disappointed for allowing myself to see where the river is flowing.

The journey on this river of expression has been so beautiful so far. I have experienced connections with other wonderful authors, I wrote a book that I am very passionate about, and I feel creative in a way that I have not in many years.

And, yet I must confront these dams on this river of creativity. How do I manage these blocks to my creativity blocks when they come up?

I must confront them. Feel them. Talk about them. The only way through this is to deal with it. There is no other way.

Here are some ways that I have found that help me get through these blocks. I hope that as you read these, you will discover ways to work through your fears.

Thought #1:

I'm not good enough to be a writer/author.

Way to work through it:

I am a writer, because I am writing these words on the page. That makes me a writer. And, by whose standards are we using to compare myself?

Thought #2:

I need to be liked before I can become a good writer.

Way to work through it:

I write, because it brings me great joy in my life. I love it when other people resonate with my ideas, but this is not the sole purpose for me writing.

Thought #3:

If I am not experiencing overnight success, it must mean I don’t know what I’m doing.

Way to work through it:

This is false. If you study the biographies of other successful people, you will find that they experience period of incredible failure and struggle before they became known. The road to success is very difficult, and it takes a long time before one is noticed. And, success is always built upon a series of failures. Trial and error is truly how we learn.

Thought #4:

I cannot withstand the pain that comes along with change.

Way to work through it:

You are far braver than you know. Reach out for help. Call on a friend who really cares about you, and ask for their support. You will find that there are many people who want to support you in making these changes in your life.
