Back In the Day

A folk-rock style song lyric on the dangers of nostalgia

————

We look back to a happier time

Back in the day

Our memory says everything was fine

Back in the day

Bright sun-lit scenes we fondly recall

We tell ourselves that we had it all

Back in the day

The past is tinged with a rosy hue

Back in the day

Nostalgia colors our point of view

Back in the day

But fact is while some things then were great

There’s darker truths we don’t contemplate

Back in the day

We claim great wealth

But too many then were desperate poor

And cherish peace

But sent men to die in far-off wars

Say all were free

But Jim Crow denied folks civil rights

There’s crosses burning in the dead of night

White-robed lynchings ‘neath the pale moon light

Back in the day

That’s all still here, not just history

Back in the day

What we do now’s what tomorrow’ll see

Back in the day

So throw away that rose-colored glass

Let’s bring some change here and now to last

And leave our future a better past

Back in the day
