Like Onion

With each layer it holds tight

Like promises of day at night

Is the strength of our unity

And resounding love in our vicinity

Mother's bowel kept me warm despite the cold

I'd always be grateful even though I grow old

How with groans she went through labor

Helpless she was even though I was her neighbor

She screamed father's name like it's his fault

But I'll come to know that to be a pregnant woman's default

She'd cry and beg for the Lord,

"I know you are there, you know I'm not odd".

When I came to light she couldn't hold the tear

I could then relate with the feeling of Jacob's Leah

As she held me fixed in her bosom

As our lives the Lord did ransom

Behind the scene is father

The sweats and stress he wouldn't bother

The bills and rents he'd not shy from

Such a darling, I'd sound his drum

Father is an admirable figure

He'd earned my trust without six figures

He's support and patience I'd thrive on

Even when he's no more, his example I'll pass on
