Whispers of the Soul
/He stood along the water's edge
A stranger to these shores
Feeling the occasional salty spray
That seeped into his pores
He thinks about her all the time
Of how things used to be
He just can't get past wanting her
This pain he couldn't foresee
They had spent only a year
Together, in wedded bliss
They never missed a morning shared
Without a tender kiss
They planned a family, but first a trip
To soothe their wanderlust
He promised her the Universe
In her eyes, he saw stardust
They picked this little island
Known to be phantasmagoric
The sandy beaches were powder soft
The sparkling waters, mesmeric
This was a lover's hideaway
They pledged they would return
For this had been a place devoid
Of worry or concern
Until the day he woke to find her resting quietly
And thought it odd how easily
She breathed so silently
After a while he went to place
A kiss upon her cheek
Loving words perched on his tongue
Sweetly honeyed for him to speak
But his warm lips felt, in return
Her skin was much too cool
The horror and the pain he felt
Made him feel like a fool
How could he not have noticed this
And let her slip away
Why hadn't he awakened her
As he had everyday
But he was not to blame for this
This he did not control
The time had come, she had been called
She had loved him heart and soul
So now he stands upon the sands
A sad, heartbroken man
Not sure at all of what to do
Of what should be his plan
But as he gazes out to sea
Her voice speaks to his heart
She says her soul remains with him
That her essence didn't depart
The impact of those truth-filled words
Went deep into his heart
He understands that with her love
He'll make a fresh, new start
