I am a brilliant watercolour 

shining brief against the blankness 

of life, a red rose blossoming out

until the roots get choked with doubt 

I am a brilliant watercolour 

shining brief until someone paints

over the red with silver or some dull

monochrome colour that lulls you 

to sleep, to dream of something that

means much more than it seems 

I am a brilliant watercolour 

that gets smaller and smaller 

until it flickers out
