This Journey

The graduation from college is often more of a milestone for the parents and grandparents of the graduate than for the graduated him or herself. And many parents or grandparents are holding their breath for 4...or more years until it happens.

Some journeys in life are simply a given.

Other journeys we must learn to trust. 

Some journeys we never finish,

And some journeys, in the end, finish us. 

The journey you've completed today 

I held akin to a holy grail.

It brought years of anxiety and sleepless nights,

And now that it's over I can finally exhale.

I whispered a prayer of gratitude today

Watching your antics there on the stage.

For I could see the lessons of this journey  

Forced you to grow without making you change.

This is a great finish, but it isn't the end.

For you have many more journeys in store.

Thankfully, I won't need to be holding my breath,

Because I've learned that's what prayer is for

This journey has taught me so many things,

Some practical, and some supernatural.

Like, every time I was right on the edge,

If I prayed my prayer was fulfilled.

So wherever your life takes you from here,

I can keep you close here in my heart.

For, by His grace, I have finally learned

Time and distance can't keep us apart.
