The Lesson from a Heatwave
/When we're young, we dismiss the dangers of a heatwave. Fortunately, some of us learn from our mistakes.
————
In high school, the four of us were indestructible.
We could build forts in freezing weather.
In the pouring rain, we’d fish for hours.
We thought we could hike all day in the heat.
In a summer scorcher we defied our parents’ advice.
We soon found out that a voyage in a heatwave was unwise.
In under an hour, we headed for the tepid river.
We cooled off for a few minutes and headed home.
In college, we thought of that horrendous hike.
We vowed to never do that again and to teach others.
In parenting days, our advice was to heed the weather reports.
