The Diamond

The girl wears a necklace

With a diamond hangs glistering

close to her heart like a gold medal

To her this gem is the identity of her essence

At least for that once

When she was approached by

a sad mother soliciting a favor

For her unfortunate son

Who’d been invalid after an accident

Leaving him paralyzed and muted

Locked in his own body

He could only move his eyes

Nailed to the bed for more than a decade

He was deprived of everything but suffering

His soul longed for freedom

He requested a dignified ending

With devoted love his mother wished

One less regret for his son as a man

She implored the girl

Ached for his tragic life

She concurred to comfort costless

The sufferer for whom this world

Had nothing more to offer

In a quiet evening

She embraced him in

The gentlest way and

Both were in tears

A gift arrived a week later

With a note only saying

He passed away

She understood as

The diamond voiced all the words
