Sea Storm

Bright blue skies darken to pewter

Zephyrs which earlier kissed youthful cheeks

Become howling cyclones blasting foam through the rigging

While gentle, bejeweled cats-paws

Grow to curling tsunamis crashing against the hull

Rain falls as lead shot upon the decks

Beams, timbers, planks groan and splinter

Twisted between waves’ troughs and crests

And we resign ourselves to the realization

That we are at the mercy

Of weathered wood, steel, rope and canvas

Worn beyond repair

Exertions of exhausted master and crew

Pressed beyond human endurance

And gods who decide our fate

Upon mere caprice and whim
