Sacred Spots

Seeking external solace and inner peace

the wayfarer searched river banks, altars,

sacred mountains, wailing walls, solar vortexes

for blessed spots where awakening thrived

transcendence ruled, and forgiveness accompanied

transgressions, atonement simultaneously

attained forcing primitive urges and mystical

refinement into shadowlands where spiritual

apparitions hitchhiked on ecclesiastical hems

as death herself traveled only two steps behind.

The peripatetic stranger fell on reverential knees

embraced twisted truths, and learned tortured holiness

resided at implausible times in most unlikely places

from tap room pool tables to bus terminal lockers,

homeless encampments to weathered park benches,

intercity subway grates to musty root cellars

all as silent as an elephant graveyard, as hallowed

as prophet bones, as ethereal as gossamer gowns—

each sanctified spot a new wayfaring pilgrimage

whose double-edged genesis foretold mortal closure
