Poetry Snobs

The “poetry snobs” are out in force

They hate my latest poem, of course

They’re telling me again this time

That “real” poetry, it doesn’t rhyme

Or my verse doesn’t meet their norm

Ignoring substance over form

Well, tell that to Austin and Keats

Who wrote their poems long before the Beats

(Though I’ve nothing against free verse

That Jack Kerouac? Well, I’ve read worse)

Yet, oh those snobs, they rant and rave

Deep from their echo chamber cave

They say their’s is the only way

But it doesn’t matter what they say

And so I pay the snobs no heed

I’m after folks who want to read

A piece that makes them think and feel

That conjures up emotions, real

And lets them know they’re not alone

That once they’ve read, that they have grown

For them, my poems have done their job

Even those who might be “poetry snobs”
