Nostalgic Daydream
Nostalgia, carry with it relief for something we escaped, or sadness for an opportunity we missed. And sometimes it brings a little of both.
————
I thought of you this morning
In a sweet, nostalgic daydream.
Filled with river walks and ice cream cones
And letters written in reams.
I remembered phone calls exploring maybe,
Probably-nots relief-tinged, yet sad
Exhilarating days of thinking we could
Heartbreaking nights of wishing we had.
I thought of receiving your letters.
How I read them again and again.
I relived the pleasure of knowing someone like you
Wanted someone like me as a friend.
I wondered how you slipped out of my life.
And I wondered where you might be.
Then the tears in my eyes and the ache in my heart
Yanked me back into reality.
Closing my eyes, I tried to picture your face.
And I saw you next to a bay.
A child beside you, holding your hand
On a beautiful cloudless day.
Then a smile touched my lips, my heart became light,
I felt close to you once again.
For I knew that I’d capture the true essence of you
With the image, I conjured just then.
So, I whispered a prayer asking my God
To keep you safe there by the bay.
And for His grace to find you, there
On a similar cloudless day.
