My Father's Way

I grew up in Taiwan 

in a time when society

still held fast to Confucian teaching:

“Strict fathers raise filial sons.”

My father was firm 

but never stern

his authority was clear 

in his quiet gaze

he need not raise his voice        

He led by example

his actions were my silent guide

to be strong 

and strive for the best 

When I was grown

he became my dearest friend

and a steady source of wisdom

Though my father has passed away

he never truly left

he still guides me 

when I face hardship

as his words from long ago      

echo in my ears
