Mapping Affection

From the glitz in Kara’s eyes

to when she last said goodbye

breathed distrust as a mist

in the bed of a pickup truck

somewhere back West.

I unfolded an untraceable map

over the back roads,

leading to routes that read,

Better left untraveled.

My fingers trekked every inch

of her sweaty body,

searching for the place

where she hid my heart;

finding it under her thumb.
