Lightning

It was a rolling boiling thunderstorm

the sky turned dark and twisty

angry wind arguing with its self

born in the blistering heat of late August

late in the evening

it blew in off the Gulf of Mexico

with a kiss of salt air

a sizzling crack snap

the air sang

windows rattled

then another snarling bolt

dry hot wind

a sudden cool breeze

then a driving rain

yet another blinding flash

a rumbling ground shaking answer

next day stuff was moved

the post hole diggers

were knocked off the shovel shelf

end of a squirrel tail burned off

a cinder block knocked out from under a flower pot

all of mother’s new wooden clothes pins

burnt off the wire line

and a new tire blown off a pick-up truck

a root from a pine tree that was split

run under it

yes

we come in

when thunder storms rumble up
