Inheritance

Twilight settles

Damp mists rise

Separate tendrils join together

into a deep fog that shrouds the land

Night falls

No light penetrates

No moon, no stars, no lamp of man

illuminates the blackened fields and meadows

In the hollow cities

There is no movement

No automobiles, no buses, no subways

move through the silent gloom

The gathering clouds have fused to one

Hard rains fallen until exhausted

And time itself now pauses

to see that which will next inherit the Earth
