I See Us

From here, I see beyond

what you want me to.

Hell.

I embrace more than I desire to

just to piss you off.

Beyond the white piano key

fence that circles

the spacious property,

lies a river, folding over itself

as the sunrise reflects

rays off the shifting ripples.

I blow steam from the brim

of the mug I cup,

and I take quick sips,

reveling in the coincidence

that you resembled my summer fling.

I twist around.

I return my focus to the oak tree.

I choke back an emotion

I can’t put my finger on

A grin tugs at the corner

of my mouth as I observe

the gold and red leaves.

You’d throw leaves,

and I’d return them

in autumn fights

until we warmed enough

to have passionate sex.

From here, I see us

in love again.
