Hospital Bed

This is before the smoke curled up in my blood

Flames hissing in my head

This is when I spoke softly to my little brother

And tucked him gently into bed

This is when I watched the IV drip,

drop into my grandmother’s body

This is when I realized that her body

had become a husk, her soul had slipped

to somewhere I could not follow

This is before I knew I was hollow

an empty vessel, filled to the brim

With something so very like sin
