Grief Lasts

The initial shock of loss

Is only the beginning

Thence comes realization

You will never see your loved one again

Never again hear their voice

Feel the warmth of their embrace

Be comforted by their presence

Knowing all the things left unsaid

Will never find voice

Or otherwise be expressed

Between you and they

The blow is mitigated with time

But what mostly passes

Is its immediacy

What remains is a hollowness

With aching desire

To have that connection once more

Yet comfort may be found

In treating that absence

As a place of solace

Which you may visit

And imbue

With memories

Slowly finding

That though your loss is never reparated

The emptiness may be filled

With the essence of all they were for you

And you for them

For in the end

While grief lasts

It may ultimately

Be subsumed by love
