For A Moment As This

The woman stands in her yard wailing

A picture of her executed son in her hand.

Her grief is raw and contagious

So overwhelming she can barely stand.

In the background, a dozen bodies lay

Their hands tied behind their backs.

To the right and left, more bodies

Piled on each other in stacks.

These are more than casualties of war

Even war has some civilized rules.

No, these poor souls were executed

And their executioners were unmerciful.

This city has been decimated.

A million souls left without a home.

Their families are scattered to the winds

Their small children are left all alone.

We are watching the worst of men,

That is, if we're watching at all.

This is men driven by visceral anger

And rendered deaf to a civilized call.

Of course, we can't stop the madness;

Alone, we can't even soothe the pain.

But neither can we ignore this brutality,

Allowing millions of people to die in vain.

What role can we play in effecting change

When we have no power or hidden cache?

Let's not forget the power we do have

When we get on our knees and pray.

We can't forget that God has a plan for us

We can't give in to our doubts or what-ifs.

For we serve a God of power and miracles.

And we were made us for a moment like this.
