Beyond the Apology

After all these years

you return

to extend an olive branch

believing a sincere apology

can wipe out the past

and establish a blank slate

Perhaps you have forgotten

the storm you created

that almost drowned me

the knots you tangled in my heart

may have loosened

yet not all have come undone

My wounds may have healed

yet my heart has not returned

to what it was

so do not place high hopes

on tomorrow

Even if the trauma fades

the scars left behind on my heart

will keep our love

from ever being the same

as it was when we first met
