A Real Boy, But Still...

A Real Boy, But Still a Boy

Reminiscent of a 1960s hit, "I'm not made of wood And I don't have a wooden heart" recorded by Elvis Presley, Joe Dowell, Bobby Vinton, and others, based on the German folk song "Muss I Denn."

————

My strings were cut the day that I left home;

in college, I’d have far more room to roam.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a great surprise

if she found pleasure pleasing other guys.

Pinocchio, I still felt like a boy,

a toy she led to find that source of joy

which time and distance meant we must us apprise

through campus visits’ long sighs and good-byes.

Though she branched out to others now and then—

her need to knead the wood of real men—

alone and shy, I came to realize

that handiwork would be my sole reprise.

Our trials passed, we married anyway

but sometimes wonder why we are today.
