A Moment

Rain

I draw to a stop at the light

And, peering over my steering wheel

See you in a car, coming the other way

Stopped as well

Our eyes connect for a moment

And, even though we’ve never met

I see your pupils dilate in recognition

As I feel my eyes widen as well

What is it that we see in each other?

My mind harkens to hopes and dreams

Travel, exploration, adventure

A soft warm breeze

On a beach, the ocean waves lapping

In the moonlight

A deep scent of jasmine

Tropical flowers, or your perfume?

Both linger

As you softly stroke your fingertips

Across my arm

Hands clasp

We watch the light reflect on the sea’s foam

And touch lips in kiss

As gentle as the night

A low breath escapes me

Part sigh, part exclamation

At the perfection of the scene

Both memory and anticipation

Of what might be

I’m suddenly startled from my reverie

By the slap of windshield wiper

Clearing my vision, and my mind

The light turns green

And without another glance

We pull away

And drive off

In opposite lanes

And separate lives

After a moment
