Why Are You Painting?

Why are you painting trees?

Because a tribe of birds wants to live close to me.

Why are you painting a flood?

Because, in my spare time, I think of how to build a ship for the day of exodus.

Why are you painting planets?

Because my window is narrow, and the walls veil the music of the universe.

Why are you painting jungles?

Because my lover cannot find her way to me through city streets.

Why are you painting a balcony that overlooks the galaxy?

Because my room is small, and the laws of my people demolished the balcony of my home.

Why don’t you draw faces?

Because the faces will summon their neighbors to rob my dwelling place.

Why are you painting seas?

Because a seagull has promised to visit me every day.

Why are you painting flowers?

Because angels go after the fragrance.

Why don’t you draw the daylight?

Because God has promised to come at the darkest hour of the night.
