Where Forests Catch Fire

August scorches summer

to shimmers—

sunburned shivers.

Humid, a breeze drifts

rocks over creeks,

blends into waterfalls,

evergreens shade her pinned hair.

We lie about ourselves,

miming intentions,

mirrored faces.

Reckless seclusion

holds fate in a breeze,

a practiced motion—

mouth-to-mouth,

life before chest pumps.

Her moan, her embrace

cools forest fires.

No firefighters—

heaven's gates open.

Earth smokes, shielding

the living

from our first time.
