When Hope Wanes

It is said,

“Faith without works is dead”

Yet where are we left

When our actions

Have less and less effect?

When we try our best

And yet are unable to accomplish

The change we desire

Or have the impact

We intend?

Slowly, faith will waver

As we come to the realization

That our “best” may not be enough

And that we may not achieve

The results we pursued

What, then, to do

When we are losing hope?

How to re-ground our expectations

So that our faith

Is not only renewed

But lives and thrives

In our acts and efforts?

We must recognize and accept

That our purpose lies not only in what we believe

Nor solely in what we have accomplished in manifesting it

But also in the ideals of what we aspire to become

And in the continual pursuit of those concepts

Moving ever forward

Turning waning hope

Into renewed faith

And yesterday’s defeat

Into today’s attainment
