What We Like

Although we may have opposite opinions and likes we still hold a strong enduring friendship

1. Salt

You throw on lots of salt.

I can’t have it, makes my blood revolt

I’m a pepper girl, out of necessity

So it’s basil, cinnamon or sweet chili sauce.

You pile on the salt

Then see me sneer, it’s my endless fear.

Once in India on the mountain

My blood pressure soared, so I spoke to the Lord

Saw the doctor in the morning

But it wouldn’t come down.

All that salt scaling through my veins

Nothing I could do about it

The chef wouldn’t change his ways

Too deep in the culture, this love of salt.

2. Books

You seek out pink flowers, Flossy, and happy endings

I prefer a hardy villain with a snarky glow

Who isn’t afraid to shake up the status quo

And make the hero work for his glory.

You cringe at conflict

I embrace it, crave an adventure

It doesn’t make me quiver or shrink

Yet determines me to wisely think

Of consequences, outcomes, higher learning.

You like a sweet tale, all smiles and a laugh

I crave the hard road, never done it by half

Where a thousand evils cast a wicked challenge

And the hero shows up, fiercely steps up

Getting stronger as the ‘tough’ get left behind.

3. Us

Maybe it’s like us when we want some peace

You’ll be gentle, quiet and light-footed

While I’m checking security or searching for a scam

Neglecting nothing, always shrewd with a plan.

Freedom comes to both of us

Usually at different times, these are the signs

That we may be opposites

But we’ll still help each other off the bus.
