Unfathomable Devastation
Unfathomable Devastation is a poem about a ship near the Red Sea in Yemen which has been left to rust. It carries at least 48 million gallons of gasoline and is rusting out as we speak. There has been too many delays to salvage this problem and a disaster is lurking.
————
Catastrophe waits in open sight,
a rusty oil tanker at sea
waiting for that inevitable moment
when oil gushes into the ocean,
an explosion the likes we’ve never seen.
It’s called “The Safer"
but it’s no longer safe,
estimated to spill four times as much oil
as the “Exxon Valadez” leak
carrying 48 million gallons
stored within her old, worn beauty.
A cooling system rusted beyond repair
with fire extinguishers no longer working,
a skeleton crew
with a tiny generator to supply the only power.
Cleanup up in the billions
with air pollution taking lives,
the biggest man-made disaster to ever happen
lurks with an unfathomable tragedy
waiting to occur.
