'Til Death Do Us Part

He sits on the back deck

after a long, hard day.

There seems to be more

of those these days.

So much he is searching

for that one moment of solitude.

Staring off into the night sky

he reflects while sipping away

on his iced glass of forget.

He hauls on a cigarette,

breathing it out slowly.

An old habit that is new again.

Tears are puffing his tired eyes.

Memories of yesteryear playing in his mind.

He is remembering the wife

that so long ago walked with him

down life’s festive aisle.

That lady is so different today.

She was so strong and beautiful.

The grace is all but gone now.

The mind was the first to go,

small memories started to disappear.

Our past nights sharing over tea

have now turned into silence.

Days turned into taking care

of a transforming adult baby.

Bathing, changing and giving support

before tucking her into bed.

The changes came so fast.

the vibrant, energetic lady, a memory now.

Sipping away at the drink,

he cannot help but wonder

if he had taken these steps

would she do what He is doing?

Actually he knows she would.

They looked at each other

and shared a vow,

‘til death do us part.
