The Thing About the Dandelions

I have never been one

in favor of violent killing

but

those dandelions have it coming

Every year I purge them

root and all

from the green spring lawn

Rip them from the earth

and pile their corpses

in a five gallon pail

It would appear

these resilient weeds

have not gotten the message

that they are unwelcome here

Let them grow

in the baseball field

in the roadside gullies

in the neighbor’s lawn

but not here

not when the grass seed

is just filling in the brown of winter

Still they invade

take root

raise their yellow heads

and declare

they will never relent

And still I tear them,

obstinate, from the soil

until the lawn

for today, at least

is once again nothing

but green
