The Sigh Of A…

The Sigh Of A Letter’s End

Her squint eyes opened with a smile…

Waiting for a stranger, she yearned.

For years, through missives she let

Her heart pen words with tears.

He responded, being posted to different

Places, often with his letters enclosed

In bloodstains, but he replied —for love.

World War II concluded, and she exhaled

In relief, hoping to meet him soon. Her dreams

Were filled with his smiles. She asked

Him to meet numerous times, but his missives

Layered only excuses. Autumn came,

Far too slow to hold her tears. His missives

Became rare, with only a few words he scribbled.

She waited for his message, only to see the postman

Give her the plain shake of the head. She wondered—

Was he imprisoned or had he paused his words forever?

But her heart waited for his silence to break.

He was eagerly waiting to smell her letters,

He knew how much she missed him.

To surprise her after his long pause, he went

To Osaka, to her home. She opened

The door, astonished to see him. She never

Anticipated him; the longing made her eyes

Wet. Her eyes lit with a smile and a sigh;

The wait was over. The tears rolled.

She fell into his arms, with her eyes lit forever!
