The Roost

The inspiration for this poem was a question on Writer's Club Website

————

The starling roost in our lilac shrub

Provides a simile of our evening meal.

The chaotic mingling of voices; each seeking attention,

Describing the wonders of their day.

The lack of calmness includes a constancy of motion.

As each participant seeks greater status, and

Abruptly as the chaos began,

A sudden silence would evolve.

A single figure arrived

Whose presence was supreme; the chaos would return,

Now more subdued,

And each would have his turn.
