Still

You left your body many years ago but you are still

pushing me to do things I don’t always feel comfortable with

like confronting difficult situations and championing my own work.

Still asserting your influence and look at me now;

two published novels on the bookshelves.

The things you said, the things you did, still touch me, still raise goosebumps.

At pertinent moments, you ring in my ears and bring a smile to my lips.

I don’t care what anyone else thinks, I know it’s you who creates that just come available parking space when I’m late and that left field opportunity that lands at my door.

Sitting on my balcony in the middle of Hampstead. Summer warmth

in the early morning. The birds sing and I’m swept away

to that rainforest in St Lucia with the hot water springs. The light falls through the trees and you are a voice in my head saying, your long lilting, ‘hello’.

You, inside me still.
